Richie and I went on our second “first” date on December 5, 1999. We hit it off an were pretty much inseparable from then on. Of course my parents were still in Vermont at that time and I did go home over the winter break from college. We talked on the phone nearly every day of the break and when my sister and I flew back to Arkansas, Richie picked us up from the airport. He had this bear waiting for me. It plays the song “Here Comes Santa Claus” and dances around. So this bear was the first gift Richie ever got me and our first Christmas decoration!
This ornament was the first one we ever received as a gift. This was given to us by Telesha V. on July 25, 2000 at a surprise lingerie shower that my church threw for me on my birthday. Along with the ornament came a note that said to remember each year when we hung the ornament how much we love each-other and to give each-other a kiss as we hang it on the tree. We do every year.
These are two ornaments we picked up on our honeymoon. The Moose came from York Beach, Maine and the Kiss came from Hersey, PA where we stopped on our way back to Arkansas.
Growing up the first sign of Christmas was always the lights in the windows. They were usually the first decoration to go up and the last to come down. My sister gave these to me and Richie on our first Christmas so we could continue the tradition in our own house.
Money was VERY tight the first year we were married. We were both still in school and living off “leftover” loan money. We had to make most of our Christmas ornaments that year. We had a lot of dried orange and apple slices, ornaments made from shapes cut from construction paper and we also made these cinnamon ornaments. Many of the cinnamon ornaments have been broken but we still have about 10 left. We made trees, candycanes and apples.
Since we didn’t have any extra money we couldn’t even afford to buy a tree topper so we were very resourceful and made this one! We used a toilet paper roll, 2 yellow construction paper stars and some glitter. It is a little Charlie Brownish but is so special that we still put it up every year. We finally have a proper star for our big tree but this little beauty goes onto the top of my mini tree every year!
