I love Richie to death but when it comes to romance sometimes (okay most of the time) he just doesn’t get it. Richie is not one to buy me flowers for ANY reason especially at really random times. So on December 3, 2003, when I was busy teaching in my Kindergarten classroom, I was thoroughly confused when several high school students from my husband journalism class walked in carrying a HUGE bouquet of long stem roses! They said, “These are from Mr. Kohl.” I said, “Are you SURE??” and they responded, “Yes!” and proceed to break into song and dance. Two begin singing “L is for the way you look tonight” while the others are dancing around. My kindergartners of course think this is hilarious and I am still ROYALLY confused! They tell me that Richie said he loved me very much, they hand me the roses and they leave. I am smiling but in the back of my mind I start to realize there MUST be more to this story. After school I walk to my husbands room to thank him and he looks at me with a silly sheepish grin. Another teacher in the room started laughing so I knew that Richie had been his crazy old self and done something silly. It was then that he told me the story. A girl in his class had broken up with a boy a few weeks back. In attempt to win her back the boy had sent her roses and a teddy bear. The girl was really disgusted, not wanting anything to do with the guy. My husband being the quick thinker that he is offers the girl 20 bucks for the roses. She of course says sure. She gets rid of the flowers and gets 20 bucks in the process. Richie gets the kids to bring them to my room and I end up with a beautiful bouquet of “Recycled Roses”.
Practically every year on Valentines there is some girl in our school who gets unwanted flowers. The girls actually seek out my husband to buy the flowers from them. Most years I come home with at least one bouquet of beautiful flowers!
