The news of Hurricane Ike was especially of interest to my husband and I because we vacationed in Galveston, Texas earlier this summer. While there, we looked at pictures of the damage caused by the 1900 Hurricane that practically wiped out the island. We were amazed and commented about how catastrophic it would be if a hurricane hit Galveston again. Little did we know that less than 2 months later it would.
This is a picture I took of Galveston from our hotel room just two months ago.
This is a picture that was taken Saturday. I found it on a news sight. The hotel just past the traffic light is the one we were staying in!
We REALLY enjoyed our time at Galveston so we are pulling for them to rebuild!
Hurricane Ike also hit close to home late Saturday night. At about 2 AM Ike, which was now a tropical storm, passed over Arkansas bringing with it heavy rain and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour! We didn’t get much sleep that night. The noise from the wind was just incredible. I cannot even begin to imagine what 110 mph wind must have been like. Many areas around us were without power when it was all over but we fortunately only lost power for just a quick second. Ike blew around everything that wasn’t tied down in our yard. The trash was strewn about, the dog bed was blown into the horse pasture and there were limbs, leaves and pine needles everywhere. Most spectacularly was the basketball goal that was knocked down narrowly missing my mother-in-laws truck and my dog Hagrid!
