In some parts of the country snow is old hat.  Winter comes to some places around October and hangs on until well into April.  Well here is Arkansas that is just unheard of…it isnt even that unusual to be in the 60’s on Christmas.  So when I went to bed last night and they were calling for a 30% chance of sleet I certainly didn’t expect to wake up to this!

I dont think the chickens will be coming out anytime soon!

A second major storm of the year granted us a snow day on Friday. Beginning late on Thursday night with a wintery mix of rain and sleet it switched over to snow in the early morning and we were awoken by an automated call from the superintendent informing us that school would be cancelled.  We slept late, stayed in our pj’s and lounged around the house all day and watched the snowfall.  I have never seen snow fall in Arkansas like it did yesterday.  It was so beautiful! BIG, heavy snowflakes and it lasted ALL day! When it was all said and done we got about 6-8 inches.  It is a little difficult to measure because it is very powdery snow and it was windy so there are some spots where there are drifts over a foot deep!!!  But overall I would say the total is around 6-8 inches.

We had hoped to get to Searcy today but the roads are impassable so we stayed home.  We slept in again and then made chicken fried rice which was super yummy.  We rode around in the four-wheeler and played in the snow.  We checked out the conditions of the highway and the roads which were awful and will likely be even worse tomorrow as the temps drop WAY below freezing and into the teens.  We tried to make a snowman but the snow was too powdery.

We know we wont be able to get out for church tomorrow and it remains to be seen if we will even go back to school monday.  There is going to have to be a MAJOR warmup before most of these back country roads are passable!

Yesterday I completed my first dozen eggs and there was a surprise in the hen house! THREE eggs! Yup! I think another one of the girls has started laying.  Olivia is SUPPOSED to be 27 weeks and Francine and Claudia are supposed to be 35 weeks old.  I am beginning to think that the lady was WAY off about their ages when I bought these birds back in May.  She had told me they were 8 and 16 weeks old and I am beginning to think they were MUCH younger.  The reason being is that Hazel , my only girl not laying, is CLEARLY not 27 weeks old and she and Olivia are supposedly the same age.  Anyway I believe Olivia layed her first egg yesterday.  When Richie gets up (it’s already 9:15!) we will be having bacon and eggs for breakfast.  We were going to have it for dinner earlier in the week but we weren’t able to.  I am really looking forward to it.

Here are some pics of my first dozen and some pick of the girls this morning.  I tried to get a picture of the “squat” but I guess it was to early in the morning because they werent being very cooperative.

In this picture you can see Hazel.  It is a little hard to see but her comb is still much smaller and lighter in color than the other girls.  I guess she is just a late bloomer!

I have a few other posts in the works, so keep checking back.  My September Book List will be up late Tuesday.  I am also gonna try to get some pics of my new art room posted now that I finally have some student work posted.

More EGGS!

Well I couldn’t let the day end without singing my praises about Francine because she layed an egg today too!  I went out to the coop and opened the door on the nest boxes just expecting to find Claudia’s egg when right there in the other nest box was another egg! 2 eggs in one day!  Looks like bacon and eggs are on the menu this week! Thanks girls!!!

My chicken Claudia layed her first egg today!!! I am so excited!  She even layed it right in the nest box!  I am so proud of my girl! I have another hen, Francine, that I expect to start laying soon too!  My other two girls still have a few weeks to go.  Here are a few pictures I took of the egg. It came out really smooth with a nice hard shell and perfectly clean!  Way to go Claudia!

ALL BY MYSELF!  I went out to water my chickens.  I was pulling the hose out and turned around and noticed something moving about 6 INCHES FROM MY FEET! It was a Copperhead!  I must have stepped right over it it was so close.  Thankfully it was facing the other direction! I was afraid to let the thing go though because then I would always wonder where it was when I went out there.  It was moving towards the pasture so I knew I didn’t have much time to react or it would be gone.  I had to RUN to the barn and grab a shovel.  I snuck up behind it and smashed into the back of its head with the blade of the shovel.  I saw it’s mouth open and venom actually squirted out of it’s fangs a little!  It was SOOOOOOOO creepy!  Eventually it was dead.  I put it on the shovel and walked over to my MIL’s house where my hubby was. I went to the door and yelled to them to come see what I had got.  They both came out assuming I had found a barn kitten or something and couldn’t believe I had killed a snake all on my own!  Richie was SO proud of me!  My mother in law looked at me and said “Well, you really are a farmgirl!”

I wish I had taken a picture of it but I forgot and Richie had already thrown it into the woods!  Bummer!
